Optimal vs normal lab ranges: how we read your blood test results

Your results should read like a letter about you, not a spreadsheet about everyone.

You feel off. Your labs say normal. One of them is wrong. That sentence sits at the top of our homepage because it describes the most common experience people bring to us: a folder of results marked "within range" and a body that disagrees.

The gap usually is not a mystery. It comes from what a lab reference range is actually built to do, and what it was never built to do. Understanding that difference changes how you read every blood test you will ever take.

What a normal range really means

A reference range on a lab report is a statistical summary of the population that lab has tested. Values are collected from a large group of people, and the range is typically drawn so that the middle 95 percent of that group falls inside it. If your value lands within those lines, it is marked normal.

Notice what that definition does not say. It does not say the people in that reference group were thriving. It does not say the range is where energy, recovery, and long term health are best supported. It says your value looks like most people's values. Normal describes the population. It does not describe you at your best.

What an optimal range asks instead

An optimal range starts from a different question: not "is this value common," but "is this value where this system functions well for a person of your age and sex." Optimal ranges are narrower than reference ranges, and they treat the space between "technically in range" and "actually well supported" as information, not noise.

The same number can be normal on paper and still be a finding. In range is not the whole story.

Take ferritin, the marker of your iron stores. A ferritin that clears the lab's lower cutoff can still sit far below the level where many people feel their best. On a standard report, that value earns no flag at all. Read against an optimal range, it becomes something worth talking about: a whisper worth hearing before it becomes a shout.

But it leaves two blind spots. It tests fewer markers, so whole systems go unmeasured. And it reads the markers it does test against the population, so in-range-but-suboptimal values pass silently.

Which values are near the edges of their ranges rather than comfortably placed? And who is reading the result: a threshold, or a physician looking at you specifically?
